The North Grove launches as official HRM Comfort Centre

The North Grove has launched as an official Comfort Centre designated by the Halifax Regional Municipality to support Dartmouth North during times of emergency. The official announcement took place on September 4th.

This is the first time that an HRM Comfort Centre will be run by an organization’s staff and volunteers rather than the municipality’s Emergency Management Office (EMO).

“When Hurricane Fiona hit in 2022, Dartmouth North was left without power for days. People who were already experiencing food insecurity lost their food. The North Grove almost lost its food as well. It was a devastating time for this community. The generous support of the province and municipality means we’re now prepared for emergencies like this.” says Executive Director, Wendy Fraser.

Comfort Centres are temporary daytime spaces where food and water are provided, as well as a place to charge devices and receive up-to-date information.

Soon after Hurricane Fiona, The North Grove applied for and received a Community Generator Grant from the province. The grant, along with the support of other partners and donors, made it possible to install a commercial generator.

The North Grove’s staff and a dedicated team of volunteers have received Comfort Centre operations training and we are excited to be a part of future emergency support in this community.

“Known as a place of gathering, sharing food and supporting families, the North Grove is furthering its vital service to the surrounding community in partnering with the municipality to become a Comfort Center. Congratulations to all who have worked to make it happen,” says Mayor Mike Savage.

The North Grove gratefully acknowledges that we live and work in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq people.

This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship which Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, and Passamaquoddy People first signed with the British Crown in 1726. We are all treaty people.

People of African descent have also shared these lands for more than 400 years.

We acknowledge the histories, contributions, and legacies of these communities and are grateful to live, work and grow food in Mi’kma’ki.
