The North Grove combatting food insecurity and social isolation in Dartmouth
As Nova Scotia combats the highest rates of food insecurity in the country, a local charity is gearing up for its busiest week of the year, preparing to serve 500 free Holiday Meals over 48 hours.
“We know that 1 in 4 Nova Scotians are experiencing food insecurity right now,” says Wendy Fraser, Executive Director of The North Grove. “The community meals we provide every week not only provide access to healthy food, they bring people together at what can be a very difficult time of year.”
More than 50 volunteers are spending hundreds of hours at The North Grove preparing 400 pounds of halal turkey, 100 pounds of yams, and 150 pounds of veggies.
The North Grove has provided more than 200,000 snacks and meals and grown more than 25,000 pounds of food on its Community Farm since opening its Community Food Centre in 2015.
“We do everything we can to reduce barriers to food through free community meals, a subsidized fresh produce market, our trading cupboard, and a range of free food skills and farm programming for all ages”
Holiday Meals are a special annual offering at The North Grove, and they are highly anticipated. The dining room is transformed into a festive and celebratory space for people to connect and break bread together. The North Grove’s Holiday Meals blend many food traditions, with the kitchen team sourcing halal turkeys and there is always a delicious plant-based option available.
Each element is prepared in-house including 30 litres of delicious cranberry orange sauce, prepared by The North Grove’s Primrose Preserves volunteer team.
“More than the food, it's the opportunity to come together that people look forward to,” says Fraser. “Especially in a neighbourhood like Dartmouth North, where nearly 90% of people are living in apartments, and half of residents are living alone."
"Everyone needs connection, especially around the holidays which can feel very isolating for people experiencing poverty and food insecurity.”
"These meals are prepared with so much love by volunteers who deeply care about this community and feel a sense of belonging here. It’s a kind of care that you feel in the space, and in every bite."
