Child Development: pinecone weaving

Updated: Oct 8

Pinecone weaving is a great activity for children to explore seasonal materials and build fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination!

Our Child Development team recently introduced this activity, using pipe cleaners to decorate, however, you could also use yarn or pom poms to include different textures.

This time of year you can usually find pinecones on the ground, in the park or along the sidewalk! If you cannot find any, you can also purchase them from your local dollar store or craft store.

We gathered some pinecones in a basket with various coloured pipe cleaners and used a fun seasonal book as inspiration. Together we explored how to weave the pipe cleaners into the pinecones. They seemed to enjoy mixing the colours!

Materials:

  • Pinecones

  • Pipe cleaners ( or yarn, pom poms, etc.)

Instructions:

  1. If you can, include your child(ren) in looking for pinecones. These are found on the ground during the fall, so it is a good opportunity to talk about seasons!

  2. Using the natural shape of the pinecone, begin weaving the pipe-cleaner through the scales, up and down. Explore the different ways you can wrap the material around the cone.

  3. Add more pipe cleaners or other materials in different colours and textures until you are happy with your finished creation.
